The perfect skin care is not about expensive products. Rather, it is about good habits and correct practices. So what are the major mistakes people make in their skincare routine?
1. Using a cleanser with harsh detergent A cleanser with more foam that washes harder doesn’t mean it cleanses extra. Very thick lather in your cleanser may mean that it contains harsh detergents, such as lauryl sulfate, that strips off skin’s natural protective lipids; further drying your skin. Thus, it is advisable to use cleansers with moisturizing or protection properties. For those with dry skin, cleansing oils or cold cream is a better choice; which removes dirt as well as ordinary cleansers, but not the protective lipids.
2. Not using Retinoid Retinols are a form of Vitamin A, better known as Retinoids, a component in skin care products. Retinol helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and minimize those that you’ve already have; thus a boost in any skincare routine, especially for ladies over 30 years old. Do not exclude it just because it looks expensive.
3. Spending too much on skincare Boutique skincare lines, expensive brands; actually, none of them are necessary. In fact, you may find a common commercial brand is one that gives you the best results. After all, some of these brands are found by big companies with the resources for research and development. So, spend the extra RM on retinols, but get the others from your nearest pharmacy or supermarket.
4. Getting Facials Facials are definitely NOT necessary as a skincare routine, and may not be the best for your skin as well! Studies have shown that about 80% people have breakouts after a facial. Main reason is, aestheticians often don’t know which products are compatible with each individual client’s skin; using products that may worsen their skin conditions, such as acne and irritations. So do your skin a favor and cut back on facials.
5. Washing your face at the wrong time Always wash your face AFTER you’ve rinsed your hair. Shampoo and conditioner contain pore-clogging components, such as isopropyl mysristate and also oils like coconut oil—both are common acne-causing ingredients and skin irritants; you wouldn’t want to leave them on your skin.
6. Not using sunscreen everyday Sunscreen is not just for your trip to the beach. Everyday exposure to direct sunlight regularly requires just as much attention as the sunny trip made once in a while. Now, you can find SPF-15 almost in every common skincare moisturizer available over the counter; so don’t hesitate to use it. A little protection goes a long way.
