Father of the Bride: His Role in a Wedding PDF   Print   E-mail

Like all marriage traditions and ceremonies, the immediate family members of the couple will always play a big part or important role. Previously, we have mentioned about the roles of the mothers—the bride’s and the groom’s. Today, we will take a look at some of the roles the bride’s father can take up to help facilitate a smooth-sailing perfect ceremony for his daughter.

In the usual cases, as with a majority of Asian marriage customs and traditions, the father is the main source of financial support, especially in his daughter’s wedding. In the ancient times, it is the father who will provide the money and valuables for his daughter’s dowry, although she might also inherit any family heirloom from her mother.

In today’s contemporary wedding, most of them no longer observe the dowry custom, but a father can help to pay for some of the wedding preparations. Here are some areas which will require the father’s help:

-          Set a budget

While the major decision making is done by the bride, or the mother (his wife), he can help sort out the financial resources available and outline a budget guideline—being the breadwinner of the family, thus knowing exactly how much the flow of income is.

-          Find Alternatives

When some ideas didn’t go as planned, or couldn’t be done, the father can help come up with an alternative solution. An example would be lending out his car for the wedding instead of going to the car rental service.

-          Keep Punctual Timing

Sometimes, when there is not much to help around, the best thing to do is show up on time for every occasion that requires the presence of the bride’s father—the actual ceremony, the reception, and the tea ceremony (in traditional Chinese weddings).

While most fathers will like to make sure his daughter have all that she needs for a fantastic wedding, he must also take care to not stretch his resources too thin. All said, the best gift a father can present to his daughter on her wedding day will be his full, sincere blessing for the young couple. Active Image
