In these days, many would have said that ‘forever’ or ‘happily ever after’ is just a fantasy in the face of numerous divorce cases around the world. However, is ‘happily ever after’ such an unachievable dream? In actual fact, the dream can come true as long as both partners make an effort to obtain it together. Creating the Win-Win situation As we are all too familiar with, disagreements in a marriage is as common as a bad day in a week. But, for a disagreement to drag out over a period of time, it can eat away at the harmony of a marriage. Most of the time, such a situation stemmed from the stubbornness of one party (or both) determined to stick by their own arguments. When such situation arises, the best solution would be to reign in one’s emotions for a while and try to create a win-win solution for both. As a marriage counselor once pointed out, there is no definite right or wrong in a disagreement. It is up to the two individual united as one to handle the situation. To love and be loved, there are times when winning needs to take a back seat, with goodwill and consideration taking first. Between ‘We’ and ‘I’ In a marriage, shared responsibilities will no doubt increase, but there is still some space left for each spouse’s individuality. After all, as the saying goes, if you do not see to your own need, then no one will. It is true that in a marriage, spouses are encouraged to discuss with each other regarding any huge decisions, negotiate with each other on any shared arrangements and most importantly, working as a team in solving any problems together. However, in the life of together, a couple should also learn to respect each other’s individual decision, support each other’s individual interest and, most importantly, encourage each other’s individual development, be it extra skills or career development—exactly what a healthy relationship helps in individual development. Be Positive, Be happy As it is in life, being happy will always be the way, if you wish to live a long, prosperous stress-free life. Not to mention that happiness is contagious, and if your spouse feels happy, you will be feeling happy as well. |
